Houston Dynamo

02 March 11:44 pm

Saturday's win over D.C. United not only gave the Dynamo three points to kick off the 2013 season, but it extended the team's unbeaten streak at home. The streak now stands at 26 games in MLS play and 31 games in all competitions.

Real Salt Lake currently holds the all-time record with 29 games in MLS play and 34 games in all competitions.

The Dynamo's last loss in Houston was June 11, 2011, a 2-0 defeat to the Columbus Crew. Since then, Houston has gone on a tear at home, compiling a 22-0-9 record in their past 31 matches in Houston.

The Dynamo are also 15-0-7 in all competitions at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Houston's unbeaten streak will be tested on Tuesday when they host Mexican giant Santos Laguna in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series. Santos is unbeaten in its last three matches but is only 1-1-3 in road matches this season.

Tickets are on sale for Tuesday's match and can be purchased at HoustonDynamo.com/Tickets or by calling (713) 276-GOAL.

When the Dynamo take the field Saturday against D.C. United, it will mark the eighth season in Houston for the men in orange. Hard to believe that it's already been seven years since Brian Ching took the Bayou City by storm, scoring four goals in the first match at Robertson Stadium.

With that in mind, we take a look back at the past seven home openers in Dynamo history:

Houston Dynamo vs. Colorado Rapids
Date: April 2, 2006
Result: W 5-2
Recap: In the inaugural match for the Houston Dynamo, Brian Ching became an immediate Houston hero, scoring four goals in a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Rapids. Alejandro Moreno put the icing on the cake with a stoppage-time bicycle kick that earned MLS Goal of the Week honors.

Houston Dynamo vs. LA Galaxy
Date: April 8, 2007
Result: T 0-0
Recap: After raising the 2006 MLS Cup championship banner, the Dynamo were unable to pull out a win on the field in their home opener. Pat Onstad and the defense held on for a shutout despite a late red card to defender Ryan Cochrane.

Houston Dynamo vs. FC Dallas
Date: April 6, 2008
Result: T 3-3
Recap: In the MLS home opener, the Dynamo fell behind 2-1 and 3-2 to their in-state rivals, but a sensational 93rd-minute goal from rookie Geoff Cameron, making his first start, lifted Houston into a tie.

Houston Dynamo vs. Columbus Crew
Date: March 21, 2009
Result: T 1-1
Recap: Brian Ching and Guillermo Barros Schelotto traded second-half goals as the Dynamo earned a point against the defending MLS Cup champions.

Houston Dynamo vs. Real Salt Lake
Date: April 1, 2010
Result: W 2-1
Recap: Brad Davis converted two second-half penalties two minutes apart as the Dynamo pulled out a 2-1 win over defending MLS Cup champion Real Salt Lake in the 2010 home opener.

Houston Dynamo vs. Philadelphia Union
Date: March 19, 2011
Result: L 1-0
Recap: A fifth-minute Danny Califf goal was enough for the Philadelphia Union who pulled out a 1-0 victory to spoil the Dynamo’s 2011 home opener at Robertson Stadium.

Houston Dynamo vs. D.C. United
Date: May 12, 2012
Result: W 1-0
Recap: In the inaugural match at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Dynamo and D.C. United looked destined for a draw before Brad Davis’ 67th-minute goal brought the crowd to its feet and gave the Dynamo three points few will ever forget.

With the Dynamo set to begin the 2013 season in just 1 day – against D.C. United at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday – we are counting down to kickoff with a Dynamo-centric countdown to Opening Day. See the bottom of this post for the complete countdown list.

Each day, we’ll post a description of what makes the number significant. If you have any thoughts on the subjects, post them in the comment section below.

Today, we conclude the countdown with #1:

By now, we have covered most of the big moments in the opening season at BBVA Compass Stadium. From the long-awaited opening last May to epic playoff wins over Sporting Kansas City and D.C. United in November, it was a magical first year at the downtown jewel. How do you match a debut season like that? The Dynamo will give it their best shot.

Here on the eve of the opening of the 2013 season, we feel a mixture of nostalgia for the incredible debut season at the new stadium with a sense of anticipation for what 2013 could bring. All 11 starters from the 2012 MLS Cup final return for the Dynamo in 2013 and the club will enjoy the benefit of beginning the season with Boniek Garcia and Ricardo Clark in camp, two key figures of the 2012 team who joined midseason. In addition, newcomers Omar Cummings and Andrew Driver will augment a Dynamo attack that produced a club-record 48 goals in 2012.

Here are some of the big dates for the new season:

March 2 vs. D.C. United: The Dynamo will raise four conference championship banners before facing United in a rematch of the 2012 Eastern Conference Championship.

March 5 vs. Santos Laguna (Champions League quarterfinals): For anyone inside BBVA Compass Stadium for the Dynamo-Valencia game last May or the Dynamo-Olimpia Champions League duel in October, they can attest that there is a different feel when an international opponent arrives in Houston. With a unique opponent to watch and vocal support of the visiting clubs from its fans, international games offer something different. On Tuesday the Dynamo and Santos Laguna will meet for the first time in a home-and-home quarterfinal series.

March 30 vs. San Jose Earthquakes: The Dynamo face the club from their original home in a meeting of the 2012 Supporters' Shield winners and MLS Cup finalists. There are also longtime friendships between the coaching staffs, including Dominic Kinnear and Frank Yallop, who shared the same bench in San Jose from 2001-03.

April 28 vs. Colorado Rapids: If the Dynamo win or tie their first four regular season home games of 2013, a win against the Rapids would set a new MLS record for the longest home unbeaten streak in league history, at 30 regular season games, surpassing Real Salt Lake's record (29 games).

May 12 vs. Sporting Kansas City: On the anniversary of the stadium opening, the Dynamo will meet their Eastern Conference rivals in a rematch of the 2012 Eastern Conference semifinals, when the Dynamo knocked out top-seed Sporting Kansas City for the second straight season.

August 17 vs. Seattle Sounders: The club that very easily could have been the Dynamo's opponent in the 2012 MLS Cup final, the Sounders visit BBVA Compass Stadium for the first time. In last year's Western Conference Championship, the Galaxy carried a 3-0 lead into the second leg in Seattle. The Sounders scored two early goals and were pressing for a series equalizer before a Galaxy penalty goal sealed the series win for LA. The Dynamo and Sounders met in the 2009 playoffs and Brian Ching scored a goal in the 96th minute of the second leg at Roberston Stadium for a 1-0 win after the clubs played 185 minutes over two legs without a goal.

October 9 vs. Sporting Kansas City: The Dynamo finish the 2013 schedule in the exact manner as 2012- with three home games before a finale on the road. This meeting with SKC is the middle game of the final three-game homestand and could be vital for both club's playoff position.

October 20 vs. New York Red Bulls: A year to the date of Houston's 3-1 win over Philadelphia that capped an unbeaten home season, the Dynamo will finish the 2013 home schedule against the Red Bulls with a season finale at D.C. United looming a week later.

*It was a lot of fun writing these posts every day as we celebrated Dynamo history over the past twenty days. I hope some of you learned a little bit about the club's history and its accomplishments over the first seven seasons. Here's to more memories in year eight!

With the Dynamo set to begin the 2013 season in just 2 days – against D.C. United at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday – we are counting down to kickoff with a Dynamo-centric countdown to Opening Day. See the bottom of this post for the complete countdown list.

Today, we continue with #2:

With only 90 days between the 2012 MLS Cup final and Saturday's 2013 season opener between the Dynamo and D.C. United, it is easy to remember the buzz inside BBVA Compass Stadium at the end of the 2012 season. The Dynamo completed the fourth unbeaten home schedule in league history with a win over Philadelphia in the home finale and won both home playoff games, extending a home unbeaten streak that stretches back 20 months to June 11, 2011, a 2-0 loss to Columbus at Robertson Stadium.

The Dynamo enter 2013 with a pair of historic home unbeaten streaks that will be on the line in the first two games of the season. The Dynamo hold a 25-game regular season home undefeated streak, the second-longest in league history behind Real Salt Lake's 29-game streak from 2009-11. The Dynamo also carry a 30-game home unbeaten streak in all competitions (including Champions League and playoffs) into 2013, which is also the second-longest in league history, trailing Real Salt Lake, which went 34 games without a home loss in all competitions during the same run.

To have a chance to break both league records, the Dynamo will have to take care of business in their first two home games of the season: Saturday vs. D.C. United and Tuesday vs. Santos Laguna in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal series. If the Dynamo win or draw in both of those games, both streaks will continue as the Dynamo host Vancouver on March 23 and San Jose on March 30.

If the Dynamo make it through the four home games without defeat, they could break the 34-game, all-competitions streak on April 14, when they host the Chicago Fire in their fifth overall home game of the campaign. The Dynamo would have to defeat Colorado on April 28 in their fifth MLS home game of the season to break the 29-game regular season record. The home atmosphere should be electric as the Dynamo try and extend both streaks beginning Saturday vs. D.C. United.
