Houston clinical in frustrating Pachuca
Led by Tally Hall's great goalkeeping and Joseph Ngwenya’s clinical
finishing, the Houston Dynamo snatched three points from Pachuca as
they opened SuperLiga 2010 group play with a 2-1 win on Thursday night.
“It
was a tough game for us, but I’m glad we stuck to it and came out with
a win,” said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear. “More chances for us
came on dead balls, and a lot of their stuff came off [the] run of play.
Their movement is so good and, on a hot night like this, if you let
your concentration drop a little bit, they will take advantage of it.”
Ngwenya's brace lifts Dynamo over rivals
The Houston Dynamo defeated their Mexican rivals Pachuca to open SuperLiga group play Thursday night, as a Joseph Ngwenya brace held off the Tuzos 2-1.
The rivalry got off to a flying start, as Pachuca forward Dario
Cvitanich had not one, but three quality chances in the first half,
including two in opening 15 minutes of the game. In the sixth minute,
Cvitanich was one-on-one with Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall, but Hall stoned
Cvitanich. In the 14th minute, Cvitanich had an opportunity from just
inside the top of the box but dragged his effort just wide.
Dynamo 2, Pachuca 1 - postgame notes
The
Houston Dynamo pulled out a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mexican rival Pachuca
Thursday night at Robertson Stadium, starting SuperLiga with a bang thanks to
two goals from Joseph Ngwenya and a big night from goalkeeper Tally Hall.
The
win puts Houston in first place in Group A, pending the outcome of tonight’s
second game between Pachuca and Puebla. All four Group A teams will be at
Robertson Stadium on Sunday night for the second round of games. The top two
teams advance to the SuperLiga semifinals.
Dynamo to use SuperLiga as springboard
HOUSTON – The Houston Dynamo hope that, for a third time, the team can turn their forays heading into SuperLiga as a momentum-builder for the second-half of the team’s MLS season.
“For us, the two years we have been in SuperLiga, we have used [it as a] springboard to get moving on the rest of the season,” said Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad. “Hopefully, we can do that again.”
