Kansas City forward C.J. Sapong’s goal in the third minute of stoppage time put a damper on an otherwise good defensive performance for the Houston Dynamo in their 1-0 U.S. Open Cup qualifying loss on Wednesday night.

“Say what you will, but for 90 minutes, I thought we played very well,” said veteran Eddie Robinson, who saw his first action of the year, putting in 86 minutes at center back. “We didn’t give up much, but we weren’t creating much.”

Playing a mix of starters and reserves, the Houston
Dynamo fell 1-0 in extra time to a full-strength Sporting Kansas City
squad in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying Wednesday night at the
Aggie Soccer Stadium in College Station, Texas.

The match was Houston’s second ever game at Texas A&M University,
with a crowd of 2,383 on hand for the dramatic event. With the loss, the
Dynamo are eliminated from Open Cup contention, while Kansas City
advances to within one game of qualifying for the tournament.

The Houston Dynamo have had their share of success in the MLS Cup, but they’ve yet to solve the U.S. Open Cup.

The two-time MLS champions will get their latest chance at USOC glory on Wednesday, when they open tournament play against Sporting Kansas City in College Station, Texas, in a qualifying match (7 p.m. CT, radio on SportsTalk 790, video stream on HoustonDynamo.com and audio stream on Sports790.com).

Major League Soccer announced today the pairings for Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
qualifying rounds, including a match-up between the Houston Dynamo and Sporting
