Cruzin' for a Cure

This year, Dynamo midfielder Danny Cruz will not only be showcasing his talents on the pitch, but will be using his time and resources to help those off it. Cruz is a 2011 nominee for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man of the Year campaign, and will be working with the Dynamo and his friend, Brendon Farmer, to find a cure for leukemia and lymphoma. Dynamo fans can help Danny by purchasing a special ticket package for Houston's May 4 game against the Colorado Rapids. For $49.99, fans get one ticket to the game plus a limited edition Danny Cruz bobblehead. Fans also have the ability to donate their ticket to the Dynamo's Kicks for Kids program which donates tickets to local charities so under privileged children can enjoy a professional soccer game.

Dynamo fans,

I am proud to announce that I have been nominated by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a 2011 Man of the Year candidate and I am asking for your support to help fight a disease that millions of men, women and children battle each day. Together, we can find a cure and assist families in the midst of this difficult battle, including one of my close friends.

This is personal...

Last year, I met a young boy who really touched my life. His name is Brendon Farmer and he was nominated as the 2010 LLS Boy of the Year. This year, I am raising money in honor of Brendon, someone who I am proud to say is my friend, and someone who I have watched fight the disease first-hand.

Brendon was diagnosed with leukemia on July 1, 2004. Fevers at night and unexplained leg pains are what initially brought him and his family into the pediatrician's office. He was a normal kid, loving and caring and genuinely enjoyed the gift of life. The word cancer was life changing for him and his family and it became a battle that they were all ready to take on. I am happy to say that today Brendon is active and vibrant and his passion for soccer is what led to our initial meeting. Together him and I are on a mission to fight this cancer and we hopefully our efforts will contribute to one day finding a cure.

I would love for you to help me join this fight…

I truly enjoy what I do for a living. I am honored to be associated with the Houston Dynamo, a first-class organization with the most amazing fans in professional sports. I am fortunate that my career affords me the opportunity to visit kids in hospitals and see their big smiles as I enter the room. These kids are fighting to stay alive every single day with the hope that a cure will be found. I want to do everything in my power to help them, but I can not do it alone.

The LLS Man of the Year campaign is based on the amount of dollars raised. No amount is too small because every dollar brings us closer to finding a cure. As a bonus, Dynamo Charities will match all donations up to $5,000, so you can double the impact of your contribution by donating now.

I urge you to involve your family, friends, and anyone else that you believe can help us with this fight. Please send the donation page link to all of your contacts and ask them to donate on Brendon’s behalf. I want to thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I will be sure to update you throughout the campaign.

Together we can make a difference.
