The Houston Dynamo lost 2-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes Sunday afternoon in the MLS Central Coast Showcase at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on the campus of the California Polytechnic State University.

The Dynamo enjoyed the majority of the possession in the early going, playing with the wind, and got the game’s first clear-cut chance in the 20th minute, when a long throw-in fell to the top of the six-yard box, but Brian Mullan’s header went just high.

San Jose came right back at the other end two minutes later, as forward Ryan Johnson, who scored twice on Friday night against Seattle, broke into the right side of the box, but his shot was saved by the trailing leg of Pat Onstad. The Dynamo had another chance in the 25th minute when Eddie Robinson tipped a free kick just wide of the post.

San Jose took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute when Ryan Johnson latched onto a failed clearance and headed it across the face of goal, where Cam Weaver was on hand to volley it in for the first goal scored against Houston during the 2009 preseason.

The Earthquakes doubled their lead in the 69th minute when a long ball out of the back found Johnson on the left wing, and he rifled a low left-footed shot inside the near post.

Houston forward Kei Kamara was ejected in the 74th minute for a late foul on San Jose’s Nick Garcia.
