Academy beats Trials squad 3-0 in showcase
Despite one of the strongest team performances in the four-year history of the Dynamo Trials format, the squad of trialists for Dynamo Trials 2011, presented by Lloyd’s Register, fell 3-0 to the Dynamo Academy U-18s Wednesday night at the Houston Amateur Sports Park. Under the watchful eyes of Dynamo first team coaches, the trialists put in a competitive performance in defeat.
The match started it out as if it might be a rout to rival the 5-0 demolition from the 2009 Dynamo Trials Showcase, with the Academy scoring in the first minute. A fierce foul gave Houston a free kick about 25 yards from goal, and Jose Cubillan bent a shot inside the right post to give the Academy the lead.
The trialists responded well, staying in the game and out-shooting the Academy over the remainder of the first half, although most shots came from outside and did not seriously trouble goalkeeper Fernando Piña (Challenge Early College H.S.) Central midfielders Jorge Deleon and Cristian Penagos and the efforts of center backs Brian Martinez and Mario Rendon helped keep the trialists at a 1-0 deficit entering the second half. Defender Josh Brieva made his second straight appearance in the Dynamo Trials Showcase.
The Dynamo Academy, just two games into its 2011-12 season and with only four true U-18s (1993 birthdays) in the lineup, began to exert more control of the game in the second half. For the game, the U-18s outshot the Trials squad 14-9, with a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
Substitute Bryan Salazar (Fort Bend Bush) made a decisive play in the 67th minute, breaking into the penalty area on the dribble before being taken down. Alan Arellano (Cy Creek) converted the penalty kick with a confident shot to the lower left corner.
The Academy put the game away in the 89th minute, when Isaiah Noreiga (Humble Kingwood Park) floated in a free kick to the back post, where Bradley Bourgeois (Cy-Fair) headed it back across the face of goal. Salazar calmly controlled the ball before firing in a low finish.
After the match, Dynamo goalkeepers coach Tim Hanley spoke to the trialists, thanked them for their hard work and dedication throughout the tryout process, and commended them on the strongest performance in the four-year history of the Dynamo Trials Showcase.
