Dynamo, BBVA Compass launch “Building a Better Houston” campaign

The Houston Dynamo and BBVA Compass launched their “Building a Better Houston” campaign at a press conference today.

The partnership between the Dynamo, BBVA Compass, and Dynamo Charities, the charity arm of the Dynamo, will yield a series of community-improvement events for Houston’s East End neighborhood from April 15 to May 6. The events will aim to build a better “Planet,” (April 15-20); “Community,” (April 23-29); “Mind,” (April 30-May 4); and “Body” (May 6) as the neighborhood prepares for the opening of BBVA Compass Stadium, the new home of the Dynamo, on May 12.

“We are 100 percent committed to being a good neighbor and community partner to the East End,” Dynamo President Chris Canetti said. “This initiative, with the support from BBVA Compass, is a prime example of that commitment and a preview of what we intend to do long-term.”

"BBVA Compass and the Houston Dynamo share the conviction that we can help people build a better future," said BBVA Compass Houston City President Mark Montgomery. "That is why we are so excited to partner with the Dynamo in the Building a Better Houston campaign, which aims to improve the lives of Houstonians."

In “Building a Better Planet,” Dynamo Charities will collaborate with Greenstar Recycling, a BBVA Compass Stadium founding partner, on various recycling initiatives to benefit the East End. Greenstar Recycling will manage a contest for the Girl Scouts as well as a public recycling drive at BBVA Compass Stadium.

BBVA Compass is committed to minimizing its environmental impact, and the bank is implementing policies and systems to reduce its water and energy consumption. Furthermore, BBVA Compass Stadium promises to be among the most sustainable stadiums ever built. Steps have begun for certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system with the United States Green Building Council to become the “greenest” stadium in Houston and one of the only LEED certified sports venues in Texas.

“Building a Better Community” will be a revitalization project for homes in the East End. The BBVA Compass Foundation, in partnership with Dynamo Charities, will execute the renovation of a group of homes belonging to underprivileged senior citizens. The homes were selected by Rebuilding Together, a Houston community outreach organization, which works to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods. Approximately 100 volunteers comprised of BBVA Compass employees, Dynamo front office staff, Dynamo supporter groups and Dynamo Charities board members will help with landscaping, painting and repair services for the project.

Dynamo Charities and BBVA Compass will adopt The Rusk School in the East End for its “Building a Better Mind” initiative to support and implement programs in two focus areas: financial education and reading, and will include Dynamo players reading to students. BBVA Compass volunteers will present “Teach Children to Save” curriculum to students in kindergarten through second grade. Additionally, Dynamo players, BBVA Compass executives and Dynamo front office staff will read to students.

BBVA Compass believes education and literacy play an important role in a successful society. BBVA Compass’ literacy program, “Reading Counts”, promotes the importance of reading to young children and provides free books to children in kindergarten through second grade. The program focuses on children in low-income public schools. So far more than 30,000 children from low-income households have benefitted from the Reading Counts program.

To culminate the “Building a Better Houston” campaign, Dynamo charities and various sponsors will host “Building a Better Body” day. The event is highlighted by a 5K Fun Run presented by Fiber One, in which 1,500 participants are expected. The day will include many activities for kids, including healthy eating tips, sports safety, concussion awareness and injury information.
