Houston Dynamo sign Honduran midfielder Alexander López

21-year-old Young Designated Player appeared in five matches at 2013 Gold Cup

The Houston Dynamo today announced the signing of Honduran midfielder Alexander López. The 21-year-old will be added to the Dynamo roster as a Young Designated Player upon receipt of his P-1 Visa and international transfer certificate. Per team and league policy, terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

López has played for Honduran powerhouse C.D. Olimpia since 2010, where he was a teammate of current Dynamo midfielder Boniek García. López was a regular for the Honduran national team at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, appearing in all five games and making four starts, including Honduras’ semifinal loss to the United States. López provided the assist on the winning goal in Honduras’ 1-0 quarterfinal win over Costa Rica.

“We’ve seen him up close, including last year in Champions League and this year in the Gold Cup,” said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear. “He is very versatile and a good fit for our team. Chris Canetti and (Director of Soccer Operations) Nick Kowba deserve credit for staying resilient, along with help from the league, to bring him here. He is a young international with a bright future and I thought he was good at the Gold Cup.”

López also appeared in three games at the 2012 Olympics in London, including an appearance in Honduras’ quarterfinal loss to Brazil. The midfielder has eight caps with the Honduras national team after regular appearances with the youth national teams, including the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

"I'm happy that we were able to execute this transfer and improve the team in this summer window,” said Dynamo president Chris Canetti. “Alex is a young, exciting player that Dom has targeted for some time, and an excellent addition for both our short and long-term outlook. We look forward to welcoming him to our club and community as soon as possible."

López registered 18 goals and 34 assists in 51 career league games with Olimpia, including five goals last season.

As a Young Designated Player (a player between 21-23 years old), López’ salary will count as $200,000 against the club’s salary budget. The budget charge for the midseason signing of a Young Designated Player (23 years old and younger) is $150,000 and this amount cannot be lowered with allocation funds.
