Goalkeeper Johan Welch makes three saves in shootout for opening win

The Houston Dynamo Academy U-16 team opened the Generation adidas Cup on Monday with a penalty shootout win over the Portland Timbers in Frisco, Texas.

The clubs played to a 0-0 draw through two 35-minute halves on the first night of the five-game tournament. Per tournament rules, the tied match went directly to a penalty shootout, where Dynamo Academy goalkeeper Johan Welch became the star.

Welch stopped three of Portland’s five penalty kicks, while a fourth missed, as the Dynamo Academy secured a 2-1 shootout win. Juan Martinez and Juan Flores were the first two penalty takers for Houston and both converted their spot kick for a decisive 2-0 lead. Leading 2-1 for Portland’s fifth kick, Welch made his third save of the shootout to seal the win.

The U-16s earned two points for the shootout win and are tied for third place in the Domestic Division after one round. Each team in the eight-team field will play five total games over a seven-day period, with three points awarded for a win, two points for a shootout win and one point for a shootout loss.
