The Dynamo once again failed to come away with their first win of the year after a physical tie with old playoff foe New York. In his fourth season, Mike Chabala finally made his MLS debut as a substitute – and was ejected in stoppage time.
The Houston Dynamo and New York Red Bulls both remained winless after a scoreless draw at Robertson Stadium Saturday night.
The teams combined for as many cards (six yellow, two red) as shots (Houston 5, New York 3) in a physical, defensive battle.
The game continued a trend of neither team winning in the other’s stadium in regular season play: The Dynamo are 2-0-2 against New York at Robertson Stadium, while the Red Bulls are 2-0-1 against Houston at Giants Stadium.
The Dynamo earned their first shutout of the season, the 51st shutout of veteran Pat Onstad’s MLS career.
New York’s Carlos Johnson was ejected in the 78th minute for a high, two-footed tackle on Houston’s Geoff Cameron.
Dynamo defender Mike Chabala was red-carded in stoppage time after a sliding tackle in the New York penalty area. It was an unfortunate end to Chabala’s MLS debut after he came on as a substitute in the 80th minute.
Houston midfielder Brad Davis made his 100th career appearance in all competitions for the Dynamo. Fellow midfielder Stuart Holden made his 50th career start for the Dynamo in all competitions, his 35th in MLS play.
