When the Houston Dynamo travel to Gillette Stadium to take on the New England Revolution Saturday night, they recognize that both teams have a lot of work to do: If they hope to make a run to the playoffs, they have to start now.
“We are both in a do-or-die situation, so it should make for an interesting game,” said defender Bobby Boswell. “Every game is important. You say that at the beginning of the year, but coming down the stretch, it’s a little more tangible. You know the points you have to get, and New England is a tough team as we have always had some tough games against them.”
Even the newest member of the Dynamo coaching staff is focused solely on getting three points. Recently hired assistant coach Steve Ralston returns to where he played for eight seasons. The longtime Rev will be honored in a pregame ceremony by his former team, but it is what he can bring during the match that will help the Dynamo most.
“I know [the Revolution] better than anyone,” said Ralston. “[The staff has] watched plenty of their games already, and all the coaches here know what they are about, but if I can give any help, I will.”
Saturday night’s game will be the 200th overall game in club history for Houston. They have composed an 82-56-61 record in all competitions. It seems only fitting that Houston and New England square off against each other considering the history between the two clubs, which includes two MLS Cup finals, a SuperLiga final, and more than a few heated regular season matches.
New England enters Saturday night boasting a seven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions; however, the Dynamo are more concerned with their own performance.
“This game we have to focus in on us,” said Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall. “We have to look at ourselves, and we need results now. We need results bad. We’re looking at ourselves as the main thing.”
