Dear MLS Fans,
Although we are all disappointed in FIFA’s decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar rather than the United States, we will continue moving forward. We remain as committed today as we have ever been to continuing our mission of growing the sport in North America and growing MLS into one of the best leagues in the world.
Through the dedication and support of the U.S. Bid Committee, MLS’ owners, Clubs and League staffs, U.S. Soccer, and the cities and fans across the country that participated in the bid process, the United States prepared and submitted an outstanding proposal to host the World Cup. By every measure, the U.S. bid was rated the highest by FIFA of all competing nations. In this, we should all take great pride.
In particular, I would like to recognize the tireless efforts of U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati in leading the Bid over the last several years. Even though the result was not what we hoped, the process positively raised the profile of, and respect for, U.S. Soccer and MLS throughout the world.
While hosting the World Cup would have provided MLS, and the sport in the U.S. and Canada, a unique opportunity over the next 12 years, the decision today does not have a negative impact on the health of our sport, our League or our future—all remain strong.
And they are getting stronger every day.
As we turn our attention to the 2011 MLS season, beginning with next month’s 2011 MLS SuperDraft, I hope you and your families have a great holiday season.
