Brad Davis’ left foot just seems to improve with age. On Sunday night, that 29-year-old leg set up the final goal for the Houston Dynamo in their 3-1 win over the LA Galaxy, giving Davis a career-high 16 assists on the season and top spot in MLS’ assist table.
There is no official award handed out for leading the league in assists, but it’s an accomplishment worthy of recognition. Heading into the LA match, Davis was level with Galaxy star David Beckham at 15. Beckham did not play against Houston, while Davis did his usual thing on the left side of the Dynamo midfield. His assist, a pinpoint curling cross that Carlo Costly headed home, was one for the highlight reel.
This season is not the first time Davis has come out on top of the assist table. In 2009, he shared the league lead with Colorado’s Omar Cummings after both finished with 12 assists on the season.
Davis has now been setting up his teammates for a full decade. The Missouri native broke into the league in 2002 with the MetroStars, notching three helpers in his rookie season. Since then, he has taken his career total to 80, tied for ninth all-time in MLS history level with Chris Henderson and Mauricio Cienfuegos. Steve Ralston, now an assistant coach for the Dynamo, is the MLS all-time assist leader with 135.
