The Houston Dynamo rolled to a 4-0 win over Southern Methodist University in a scrimmage on a wet Saturday at Houston Amateur Sports Park’s turf practice field. Brian Ownby, Will Bruin, Emerson Sato and Colin Rolfe each scored as the Dynamo continued their preseason with a win over the Mustangs.
The Dynamo scored a pair of goals a minute apart just before halftime to take control of the game 3-0 before finishing the scoring in the second half. Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear’s lineup featured eight returning players and trialists Eder Arreola, Emerson Sato and Ownby.
Adam Moffat started an offensive sequence in the 16th minute with a long ball to the corner for Corey Ashe, who delivered a cross into the box for Ownby, who headed wide of the goal. Four minutes later, a free kick from Arreola bounced to Ownby, who fired a shot that was saved by SMU goalkeeper Juan Robles.
The Dynamo would break through in the 23rd minute as Ashe served a great cross to Ownby, who leaped to head the ball home from six yards for a 1-0 Houston lead.
Two minutes later, Sato, a trialist from Brazil, slipped a ball behind the Mustang defense to Ownby, who produced a charging save from Robles.
In the 43rd minute, a giveaway from the SMU defense went to Bruin at the top of the box. Bruin buried his shot in the side of the net for a 2-0 lead to continue his strong preseason.
Within a minute, the Dynamo would add to their lead. Kofi Sarkodie delivered a cross to Sato near the penalty spot, and Sato headed the ball past Robles for a 3-0 advantage.
Houston would complete the scoring in the 49th minute on a strong effort from Rolfe. The forward received the ball near midfield and dribbled all the way into the box before his shot was blocked. The rebound bounced to Arreola, who sent it back to Rolfe for a volley-finish and the game’s final goal.
The Dynamo will continue their preseason on Monday with a scrimmage versus the Dynamo Academy at 10:30 a.m. at Houston Amateur Sports Park.
