A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT: C.D. FAS

Full name: Club Deportivo Futbolistas Asociados Santanecos

City: Santa Ana, El Salvador

Founded: 1947

El Salvadorian titles: 17

Since its formation in 1947, FAS has won 17 El Salvador Primera Division titles and finished second 14 times. FAS is led by Alejandro Bentos, who has scored 92 goals in nearly 300 games with the club. Captain Marvin Gonzalez is an El Salvador international defender, with 83 appearances for his country, second most in El Salvador history. “The Tigers” are led by manager Agustin Castillo, the Peruvian who led FAS to five titles from 2002-05. FAS won the 1979 CONCACAF Champions Cup, the predecessor to the Champions League. Goalkeeper Luiz Contreras started all 18 games last season for the Tigers.

2012 Clausura Season: Like most Latin American countries, El Salvador uses an Apertura and Clausura schedule format, with a season divided into two “halves”, with a champion of each section. Apertura, meaning “opening”, is the first “season” of the year, ending in December. The Clausura, or “closing” season typically ends in May. In the 2012 Clausura, which ended in May, FAS finished in fifth place, with a 6-3-9 record, for 27 points in 18 games. It scored 24 goals and conceded 23 on its way to the mid-table. Despite the fifth place finish in the Clausura, it finished in second place in the league’s aggregate table (which combined the Apertura and Clausura standings) after a 9-4-5 finish to the 2011 Apertura. With its second-place finish in the aggregate table, it qualified for one of El Salvador’s three Champions League slots, along with Isidro Metapan and Aguila.

2012 Apertura Season (current): The current season began on July 14, and FAS is currently 2-2-2, and in fifth place in the ten-team league, with 6 goals scored and 5 goals against after five games.

2012-13 Champions League: FAS opened its Champions League campaign with a 3-0 road defeat to Olimpia on Aug. 2. The Tigers fell behind after just 67 seconds, with Olimpia’s Luciano Emilio scoring off a corner kick. In the 17th minute, another Olimpia corner kick resulted in a goal, with Juan Carlos Garcia scoring for a 2-0 Olimpia lead. FAS defender Nestor Rual was issued a red card in the 69th minute for a late, high challenge on Olimpia’s Rojas. Six minutes later, Rojas scored the final goal for Olimpia.
