Last weekend did not go exactly as the Dynamo had planned. After a good week of training and a Thursday night demolition of FAS in the CONCACAF Champions League, Houston was primed to continue that form in MLS play and take three points from the Philadelphia Union. After 90 minutes, however, Houston found itself on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline and stuck in fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
"Nobody is happy," midfielder Brad Davis said after Sunday's match. "We wanted to come in here, get a win, and that didn't happen."
Although Boniek Garcia's goal of the week candidate leveled the match before halftime, a foul in the penalty box on Andre Hainault and an apparent offiside goal sealed the match in the second half for the home side.
Due to D.C. United's 1-0 win over Chivas USA Sunday night, Houston could not have moved up the standings this weekend, but a win over the Union would have put four points between Houston and the Columbus Crew. Now, with only four games left in the season, the Dynamo are hanging on to a one-point lead for the final playoff spot.
"With four games left, it's got to come out," Davis added. "Everybody's got to have the proper head to win this week. You’ve got to have the desire. The coach and teammates, you can only talk so much. It eventually comes down to each individual and putting everything that they have on the field for ninety minutes. That’s what it takes to win."
The Dynamo will travel back to Houston today and have four days to prepare for Saturday's matchup against the New England Revolution. The two teams drew 2-2 on May 19 at Gillette Stadium.
