The Houston Dynamo secured a 6-1 win over Houston Baptist University on Wednesday evening. Cam Weaver scored two goals and Brian Ownby, Giles Barnes, Alex Dixon and Anthony Arena added a goal apiece in the scrimmage at Sorrels Field on the campus of HBU.

The Huskies jumped in front in the tenth minute. Midfielder Mark Gendi took a free kick 40 yards from goal and curled it into the box, where Walter Kromholz flicked a header into the side of the net for a 1-0 HBU lead.

The Dynamo answered two minutes later, as Ownby received a cross from trialist Mike Chabala and headed it home from six yards for an equalizer.

In the 15th minute, midfielder Franck Songo’o drove a corner kick into the box and Barnes nodded it past Husky goalkeeper Zach Harwerth for a 2-1 advantage.

Houston Baptist midfielder Kristopher Tyrpak nearly equalized in the 40th minute, firing a shot from the left side of the penalty area off the outside of the near post.

Weaver added his name to the score sheet six minutes after halftime, finding an opening in the six-yard box to head a delivery from trialist Jimmy Nealis into the net, extending the lead to 3-1.

Weaver struck again in the 69th minute, as defender Eric Brunner flicked a corner kick from Dixon into his path, and Weaver nodded past substitute goalkeeper Kevin Suarez to make it 4-1 Dynamo.

It was Weaver’s fourth goal in two scrimmages against HBU this preseason after the forward scored twice in a 3-0 win on Jan. 26.

Houston lengthened its lead on a quality sequence in the 75th minute. Defender Kofi Sarkodie drove in a cross from the right flank to the penalty spot, where forward Jason Johnson used his chest to settle the ball in the path of Dixon, who smashed it into the far side of the net for a 5-1 lead.

Trialist Anthony Arena capped the scoring six minutes later, finding space at the back post to head a cross from Nealis past Suarez for Houston’s fifth headed goal of the game and a 6-1 win.

The Dynamo continue preseason on Saturday at 10 a.m. when they host Southern Methodist University in a scrimmage at Methodist Champions Field at Houston Amateur Sports Park. Parking and admission are free to the public.
