One of the most talked about plays over the weekend was the decision by referee Allen Chapman to not issue a red card to Tally Hall when he took down Galaxy forward Jose Villareal in the 24th minute of Sunday's 1-0 Dynamo win.
Galaxy players and coaches were not shy about their displeasure. Head coach Bruce Arena told reporters after the match: "I think in most cases that is a red card, but to not even give a card...if they give a yellow card you can understand that, maybe, but it is remarkable he didn't give a card on the play."
So why didn't Chapman issue a red card on the play? According to MLSsoccer.com senior editor Simon Borg, Chapman made the correct call because Villarreal's touch around Hall took him away from the goal and not toward it. Borg also pointed out that Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell had recovered and was in position to protect the net had Villarreal gotten around Hall, meaning that the Dynamo goalkeeper was not the last man on the play.
ESPN broadcaster Adrian Healy, who called the play-by-play for Sunday's match agreed with Borg and had this to say on Twitter (FYI DOGSO stands for Denial of a Goal Scoring Opportunity):
