MLS Reserve League: Houston Dynamo Reserves fall to New York Red Bulls Reserves

The Houston Dynamo Reserves fell to the New York Red Bulls Reserves, 7-2 on Sunday in the MLS Reserve League at BBVA Compass Stadium. Andre Akpan scored four goals to lead the Red Bulls Reserves to the win.


The Dynamo Reserves are now 4-4-0 (12 points) in the Reserves League East Division. The Red Bulls Reserves improve to 4-5-2 (14 points).


Akpan scored three goals in the first 27 minutes as the Red Bulls Reserves opened an early margin.


Red Bulls midfielder Marius Obekop cracked a shot from 30 yards off the post and into the net for a goal in the 35th minute and a 4-0 lead.


Dynamo forward Calen Carr made his first appearance in a competitive game this season after suffering a torn ACL in last year’s MLS Cup.


Carr scored in the 42nd minute on a diving header off a cross from midfielder Brian Ownby.


After halftime, Red Bulls midfielder Michael Bustamante added a goal from the right side of the penalty area to stretch the lead.


Dynamo forward Omar Cummings struck a shot from distance and found the net in the 72nd minute.


Akpan scored his fourth goal in the 79th minute, driving down the left flank before slotting his shot to the far post. 


The Red Bulls capped the scoring in the 84th minute as Ruben Bover headed home an Akpan cross from six yards for a 7-2 win.


The next Reserve League game for the Dynamo is Saturday, Oct. 5 against the Montreal Impact at Houston Amateur Sports Park.
