Around the NWSL: Week 4

NWSL_week4_WNY

Four weeks in, and just four points separate the top of the table from the bottom in the NWSL. Let's take a look around the league in Week 4 to see how we got there.

Chicago Red Stars 1-0 Sky Blue FC

Chicago got one last week with their USWNT players and made the most of it with the 1-0 win to stay undefeated on the season and draw level with Portland Thorns FC at the top of the NWSL standings. Danielle Colaprico tallied her first professional goal in the 55th minute, placing a left-footed shot after controlling her own rebound in the box when Sky Blue couldn't clear a corner kick. The Red Stars played their third of four straight home games to open the year, continuing next week at Toyota Park in a doubleheader with the Chicago Fire.

Western New York Flash 3-1 Boston Breakers

Western New York took to the field at Sahlen's Stadium for the first time in 2015 and came away with three points for the first time as well. After Stephanie McCaffrey continued her great start to her rookie season (1 goal, 2 assists in 3 games) by setting up Morgan Marlborough for the opening goal just 15 minutes in, the Flash took control. Former Dash midfielder Becky Edwards set up a goal for Sam Mewis on a free kick in the 23rd minute (Sam gaining the upper hand on her sister, Kristie, who plays for the Breakers), then Edwards scored herself in the 62nd minute off a give-and-go with Lynn Williams. Sydney Leroux killed the game in the 88th minute with her first goal for Western New York. Edwards was named NWSL Player of the Week for her performance.

Houston Dash 0-2 FC Kansas City

FC Kansas City showcased their depth for the World Cup months as Liz Bogus and Shea Groom tallied goals for the Blues' second straight win. The Dash had the help of Canadian Allysha Chapman on the left side for one last game, but couldn't generate enough going forward to stop their second loss in consecutive weeks.

Seattle Reign FC 3-1 Washington Spirit

Seattle rebounded from their two-game losing streak with a convincing win over the Spirit. Beverly Yanez put Reign FC up early with a one-touch finish to the upper 90, then Merritt Mathias got on the end of a Kim Little cross to stretch the lead at the start of the second half. Crystal Dunn played a beautiful through ball to Joanna Lohman to bring the Spirit back a goal, but Jess Fishlock slid to slot home Seattle's third goal, again off an assist from Little.
