The Dynamo and FC Dallas have met twice in the 2016 MLS regular season, a 5-0 win for the Dynamo in Houston on March 12 and a 1-1 draw in Frisco on June 2. The rivals have met three times in Open Cup competition, with the Dynamo going 1-2-0. The Texas clubs last met in the 2014 Fourth Round, with FC Dallas winning 3-2 in extra time at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo are 10-2-0 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup at home.

The Dynamo defeated Sporting Kansas City 3-1 at BBVA Compass Stadium in the Round of 16 on June 29 behind a pair of goals from Mauro Manotas. The 20-year-old Colombian opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a deft volleyed finish off of a cross from Abdoulie Mansally. Then, in the 84th minute, he slipped a low right-footed shot past Sporting KC goalkeeper Alec Kann to seal the victory. Alex Lima put Houston up 2-0 in the 55th minute, but a goal by former Dynamo captain Brad Davis pulled Sporting KC back into the game six minutes later.

The Dynamo move on to the quarterfinal for the second consecutive season and the fifth time in the club’s 11-year history. A win against Dallas would put Houston into the semifinals for the third time in club history.

FC Dallas defeated the Colorado Rapids 2-1 in their fifth-round match on June 29. The teams ended regulation tied at a goal apiece, but FC Dallas forward Maxi Urruti put the home team ahead five minutes into the first extra period. Dallas held off a furious late surge from Colorado, including a goal-line clearance moments before the final whistle, to advance to the quarterfinals for the 15th time in club history. Only one club in the 103-year history of the tournament has more appearances in the quarterfinals (Kutis SC from St. Louis with 17 from 1953-1986.)

Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 100-plus-year-old single-elimination tournament. In 1999, the U.S. Open Cup was renamed the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to honor the long-time soccer supporter and pioneer. Hunt, who died in 2006, was one of the sport’s first major ownership figures in the United States and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
