Houston Dynamo forward Erick "Cubo" Torres got his first start of the Olympic Games as Mexico faced the Republic of Korea, but the quest to defend their 2012 gold medal ended in the group stage with a 1-0 loss.

Mexico, needing a win to advance to the quarterfinals, pressed hard for a goal—tallying 22 shots (four from Torres) compared to South Korea's 5. But the Koreans' first—and only—shot on target was a blast from Changhoon Kwon in the 77th minute that beat the keeper to give Korea the lead.

Torres played the full 90 minutes after playing 17 minutes in the opener against Germany. Mexico finished in Group C with four points, behind leaders Korea (7 points) and Germany (5 points).
