Houston Dynamo 2 return to league play on Sunday when they visit Sporting KC II at Rock Chalk Park in Kansas. This is the second meeting of the season between both teams and Dynamo 2 look to split the series after a 2-1 loss in the home opener on March 17.

Dynamo 2 did not compete in Matchday 4 due to Minnesota United FC 2’s participation in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday, April 4 and will be played later this year.

Houston looks to secure their first three points of the campaign on Sunday. All three of their games this season were decided by a single goal. Houston’s most recent match finished in a 1-0 loss to Austin FC II at SaberCats Stadium. The team played the final 39 minutes of the match with 10 men following a red card to Exon Arzu. The Honduran forward has played a key role in Houston’s offense this season, scoring in back-to-back games to start the 2024 campaign.

One of those goals was against Sporting KC II in the 2-1 loss at home on March 17. Beto Avila and Pau Vidal scored in the final 10 minutes of the game to secure three points. Four Dynamo Academy players and four Dynamo Academy products earned their first appearance of the season in that match. To date, 12 Dynamo Academy players or alums have played for the team this season.

One of the Dynamo Academy players to play each match this season is 16-year-old Isaac Mwakutuya. He joins Dynamo Academy alum Diego Gonzalez as two of the three players to play every minute for the team to start the season. The third is Femi Awodesu, who joined the team for the 2024 season after a four-year career at Penn State University. The defender won the Big Ten Championship, Big Ten Tournament Title and regular season title in 2021.

Sporting KC II snapped a two-game losing streak on Sunday with a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rapids 2. Avila scored a brace and Kamron Habibullah scored a hat trick to secure the comeback victory.

The third and final meeting of the regular season between both teams is scheduled for June 7 at 6 p.m. CT at Rock Chalk Park.
