Houston Dynamo defender Adolfo Machado has been named to Panama’s final 23-player roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, head coach Hernán Darío Gómez announced today.
Machado, 33, will represent Panama at their first-ever World Cup this summer. The Panama City native appeared in 12 matches for Los Canaleros during World Cup qualifying. He has made 75 career appearance for Panama since making his international debut on June 1, 2008 against Guatemala. He has one career goal at the senior international level, which came on June 19, 2009 against Haiti.
Panama as a nation failed to qualify for the World Cup in its first 10 attempts, dating back to the 1978 tournament. The team qualified for the first time last fall by finishing third in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying.
Machado, who primarily plays right back for Panama and center back for the Dynamo, came to Houston prior to the 2017 MLS season. He has appeared in 43 of a possible 45 regular season games, starting all of them, and started all five of Houston’s playoff matches last year.
Panama played a send-off match in Panama City on Tuesday night against Northern Ireland, drawing 0-0. Machado played the full 90 minutes. They will face Norway in Oslo on June 6 for a final tune-up before heading to Russia.
In Russia, Panama will face Belgium (June 18), England (June 24), and Tunisia (June 28) in Group G play.
