Three Houston Dynamo players have been selected by the Honduras National Team ahead of this summer’s 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, the Honduras Fútbol Federation (FENAFUTH) announced today.
Forwards Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto along with defender Maynor Figueroa will represent Honduras in the tournament. Honduras will compete in Group C along with arch-rivals El Salvador, Jamaica and Curaçao.
Honduras will open play on June 17 in Kingston, Jamaica against Jamaica before traveling to Houston and BBVA Compass Stadium for the second round of group play on Friday, June 21 against Curaçao. Group C play concludes on Tuesday, June 25 in Los Angeles when Honduras and El Salvador will face off.
The Concacaf Gold Cup is a major international tournament which determines the champion of North and Central America and the Caribbean. Played biannually, the tournament features 16 teams, divided into four groups. After a three-game round robin group stage, the top two teams from each group advance to a single-elimination knockout stage en route to the Final.
Elis has been capped 31 times and has scored seven goals for his country. The 23-year-old winger has already recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in all competitions for the Dynamo during his two-plus seasons in Houston, and is just the fifth player in club history to notch 20 or more goals and 20-plus assists in league play.
Figueroa holds the record for most appearances for Los Catrachos, with 150 in his career. The left-footed center back has started 13 of Houston’s 16 matches in all competitions this season, his first with the club.
Quioto has earned 41 caps for Honduras and has scored nine goals. At the club level, the 27-year-old has pumped in 16 assists and scored 13 goals since moving to Houston in 2017.
The Dynamo return BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday evening to host Sporting Kansas City at 7:30 p.m. on Soccer For All Night. The evening will be a celebration of all the ways that the beautiful game brings people together on the field, in the stands and around the world. Tickets for that match start at $24 and may be purchased online at HoustonDynamo.com, by phone at 713-276-4625 (GOAL) or at the stadium box office.
