The Houston Dash waived defender Ari Romero, the club announced today. Romero first joined Houston in 2014 through the NWSL Expansion Draft and was part of the club’s inaugural season logging 21 appearances. The defender went on to build on an extensive international career playing in Iceland, Norway and Australia for three seasons before returning to Houston. Romero started in eight of 10 appearances for the Dash, logging one assist in 2019.
The Mexican American has represented Mexico’s Women’s National Team since 2011 earning 31 appearances and scoring one goal. Romero spent her collegiate career at the University of Nebraska where she became a stalwart center back for the Huskers. Romero earned 2013 Big Ten Defender of the Year and 2013 Big Ten Tournament Defender accolades during her senior season with the Huskers.
Following these transactions, the Dash now have 28 players on their active roster. The Dash are set to return to competition on July 1 at 9 p.m. CDT when they kick off their 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup tournament run against the two-time defending NWSL champions, the North Carolina Courage.
