The Houston Dynamo fell to a 2-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders Sunday night at Qwest Field in Seattle, extending Houston’s winless streak in MLS play to a club-worst nine games (0-5-4). The Dynamo return to action Saturday night with another road game, this time facing the New England Revolution in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall, who is from nearby Gig Harbor, Washington, made seven saves in defeat, a season high in MLS play and tying a season high in all competitions. Hall’s best stop came in the 47th minute, when he denied Seattle’s Steve Zakuani on a breakaway.
In a physical, tightly contested game in a venue hostile to the Dynamo, the Sounders broke through with a moment of individual skill in the 64th minute, when goalkeeper Kasey Keller punted a long ball upfield. Seattle’s Fredy Montero, the MLS Player of the Month in July, outbattled Houston’s Eddie Robinson for the ball and fired a low, left-footed shot inside the left post for his eighth goal of the season. It marked the ninth consecutive game with a goal or assist for Montero.
With Houston pushing forward in an attempt to tie the game, the Sounders put the contest away in the 88th minute when Montero slotted a pass through for Uruguayan signing Alvaro Fernandez, who slotted the ball past Tally Hall for his first MLS goal and the final margin of 2-0.
For Houston, veteran midfielder Brian Mullan came on as a substitute, making the record 180th appearance in all competitions of his Dynamo career. Midfielder Corey Ashe played 58 minutes to reach the 1,000-minute mark in league play for the second consecutive season. Midfielder Geoff Cameron came on as a second-half substitute, his first league appearance since rupturing his PCL against the Chicago Fire on April 24.
Houston defender Mike Chabala picked up his fifth yellow card of the MLS season and will be suspended for Saturday’s match against the New England Revolution.
The Dynamo played without goalkeeper Pat Onstad (abdominal strain), defenders Ryan Cochrane (adductor strain) and Adrian Serioux (hamstring); and midfielder Lovel Palmer (red card).
