I thought it would be a good idea to write a special edition blog and cover some thoughts on the Brian Mullan trade to Colorado for Colin Clark and allocation money.

Before I get into the trade, let me start by saying Brian Mullan was a huge part of this organization’s great history. He symbolized the team’s character with his heart, desire, and attitude. He made big contributions, both on and off the field, and we are thankful for all he has done. He will be missed and always appreciated. I wish him luck in Colorado.

We are sad to see Brian moving on, but we face a reality where we need to look to the future. This trade makes good sense for the Dynamo and was one step forward in the process of change and improvement. We are looking to the future and paving the way to rebuild the team back to its winning ways. Our objective is to bring in young talent and clear salary cap room to set up off-season signings. This trade accomplishes both.

Brian, who is 32 years old, was unlikely to return to the Dynamo after this season. This was a conclusion that was shared by both parties. Given this fact, it made sense to move him now and get assets in return.

In this particular case, we feel that we got very valuable assets in Colin Clark and allocation money. Clark is 26 years old and is highly regarded around the league. Colin’s 2011 salary cap number is far less expensive than Brian’s. That fact, coupled with the allocation money, helps add salary cap room for new signings.

Colin is recovering from a recent knee surgery and won’t be available this season. Our medical staff has done its due diligence, and they are confident of a full recovery for next year.

Yesterday was the MLS trade deadline for the 2010 season, which is why this deal took place now. We entertained other trade opportunities, but nothing else came to fruition. A brief trade window will open up around the expansion draft in late November.

I hope to see you at Saturday's game against Toronto and hope you will stay for the post-game fireworks show!

As always, please send comments or questions to ccanetti@houstondynamo.com. Thanks.
