Houston Dynamo president of business operations Chris Canetti confirmed Tuesday that the club is seeking to sign Jamaican international defender Jermaine Taylor.
A report in The Jamaica Observer suggested that the only thing standing in the way of Taylor reaching a deal with the Dymamo is a physical. Canetti, however, said the player will undergo a trial before any deal can be reached.
“We are interested in signing Jermaine and [are] looking to do so,” Canetti said via a team spokesperson. “He is coming to town this week in what will hopefully be the final steps to completing a deal.”
The current St. George's SC defender will arrive in Houston on Wednesday and will begin his trial with the Dynamo on Thursday.
A natural center back, the 26-year-old Taylor impressed Dynamo coaches at the 2010 Digicel Caribbean Cup while anchoring the back line during Jamaica’s tournament victory. He has 37 caps for the Reggae Boyz.
Joining Taylor on trial will be Jamaican midfielder Richard Edwards. The current Harbour View man will start his trial on Friday.
Taylor and Edwards arrivals bring the current batch of Caribbean players on trial to six – five from Jamaica, one from Trindad and Tobago. However, Steven Morrissey, Lester Peltier, François Swaby, and JeVaughn Watson will see their trials end Saturday after the Dynamo play FC Dallas.
