Academy College Report - Oct. 4

The men's college soccer season provides a chance to keep up with the 12 protected players from the Dynamo Academy competing in the college ranks. Two players were signed to professional contracts last January after completing their college season, so some of these names could make an impact on the Dynamo's future.


Below is a report on Dynamo Academy players from the last two weeks, sorted by year of eligibility:


Seniors
Daniel Roberts, MF/FW, UNC-Wilmington (Fort Bend Clements) Dynamo bio | UNCW bio
Played all 90 minutes and assisted on both goals as the Seahawks won their first Colonial Athletic Association game of the season at home against Drexel on Saturday. Roberts had three shots in the match and set up Jack Ward in the 57th minute with a long ball into the penalty area and Thomas Driver in the 80th minute on a free kick. UNCW plays at James Madison on Wednesday and at Old Dominion on Saturday, both conference games. Watch video of Roberts' two assists:



Clayton Holz, MF, Stanford (St. John's) Dynamo bio | Stanford bio
Made his third appearance of the season in 2-0 loss at UCLA on Sunday as Stanford dropped to 3-6-1, 0-2 in Pac-12 play. The Cardinal host Cal on Sunday night.


Matt Kirby, MF, Denver (Beaumont Msgr. Kelly) Dynamo bio | DU bio
Played 43 minutes as a sub in Denver's scoreless tie vs. Air Force on Saturday to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Play. The Pioneers will host New Mexico on Friday and UNLV on Sunday.


Pana Vasquez, FW, Cal State-Monterey Bay (Cy Falls) Dynamo bio | CSU-MB bio
After graduating from SMU, where he battled injuries throughout his career, Vasquez transferred to Division II Cal State-Monterey Bay for his final year of eligibility. With the Otters, Vasquez has appeared in all nine games, making eight starts and contributing one assist. Cal State Monterey Bay hosts Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and plays at Cal State East Bay on Sunday.


Juniors
Matt Boullt, DF, Tulsa (Fort Bend Clements) Dynamo bio | Tulsa bio
Continues to play every minute for the Golden Hurricane, but Tulsa fell 2-1 at South Carolina on Friday in the Conference USA opener. This week, Tulsa hosts SMU on Wednesday in league play and Green Bay on Saturday.


Sophomores
Sebastien Ibeagha, DF/MF, Duke (Fort Bend Hightower) Dynamo bio | Duke bio
Rested due to injury in 4-1 win over Presbyterian on Sept. 27 but returned to help Duke rally for exciting 2-2 tie with fifth-ranked rival North Carolina in a nationally televised match on Friday night. The Blue Devils play at Davidson on Tuesday and will host North Carolina State on Friday.


C.J. Odenigwe, DF, North Carolina (Fort Bend Travis) Dynamo bio | UNC bio
Odenigwe is likely to miss the entire season after suffering a preseason injury.


Johnny Torres, MF, Wake Forest (Humble Atascocita) Dynamo bio | Wake bio
Did not appear in wins over Davidson and Virginia Tech; Demon Deacons play at Boston College on Friday in Atlantic Coast Conference play.


Pat Wall, GK, Notre Dame (Strake Jesuit) Dynamo bio | ND bio
Has not played while serving as one of the backups to starter Will Walsh; nationally-ranked Notre Dame lost to St. John's in overtime last weekend; this week, the Irish host Northwestern on Wednesday and UConn on Saturday.


Freshmen
Leo Ayala, DF, Central Florida (Challenge Early College) Dynamo bio | UCF bio
Helped Knights to strong start in Conference USA play with wins over Kentucky, 2-1 in overtime, and SMU by a 4-2 score. Ayala started and played 67 minutes against Kentucky, then was limited to nine minutes as a sub against SMU, the first game all season he did not start. This week, UCF hosts defending conference champion South Carolina on Saturday in a game between early favorites for the conference title.


Alan Hernandez, DF, Rhode Island (Pearland) Dynamo bio | URI bio
Hernandez, who has started every game, and URI will return to action when they host Saint Louis on Friday and Charlotte on Sunday.


Ábe Matamoros, MF, Tulsa (Strake Jesuit) Dynamo bio | Tulsa bio
Started his fourth consecutive game and played 64 minutes as Tulsa fell 2-1 at South Carolina.


Miguel Zapata, MF, Tulsa (Katy Mayde Creek) Dynamo bio | Tulsa bio
Came off the bench and played 12 minutes in 2-1 loss at South Carolina.


Area College Teams
Houston Baptist University
HBU dropped to 0-9-1 with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Atlantic Soccer Conference power Adelphi at home on Saturday night, allowing the game-winning goal with 22 seconds remaining. Former Dynamo Academy goalkeeper Kevin Suarez made seven saves for HBU. The Huskies will meet Central Arkansas in Plano on Wednesday night.


Other Connections
Goalkeepers coach Tim Hanley's son, Riley Hanley, helped St. Mary's to a 1-0-1 mark in its first weekend of West Coast Conference play. In Friday's 0-0 tie at San Diego, Hanley came on in overtime and hit the post. He then made his first collegiate start on Sunday at Loyola Marymount and knocked in his own rebound of a penalty kick for his first collegiate goal and the game-winning tally. St. Mary's hosts Santa Clara on Friday and will play at San Francisco on Sunday.
