Deric made four saves in the first 25 minutes, stopping Milos Stojcev twice (including a great stop from close-range) and Soony Saad on Kansas City chances. The Dynamo then went in front in the 27th minute, as Dixon picked up the ball in the center circle, dribbled past two defenders to reach the penalty area, and tucked a low shot into the left corner of the net from a tight angle.

Kansas City nearly tied the game in the 36th minute when Lawrence Olum struck the post from close range after a cross from Jeferson.

Houston responded by going ahead 2-0 in the 42nd minute, with
Danny Cruz
starting the attack on the right sideline and feeding Will Bruin outside the penalty area. Bruin dribbled past a defender, then switched the ball to the far side of the penalty area. Clark arrived, took a terrific first touch to get around a defender, and calmly fired a low shot past Kronberg.

Chances continued to come in the second half for Sporting Kansas City, but the Dynamo defense withstood the pressure for the shutout. Deric made saves on Shavar Thomas and a Michael Harrington cross, while Dynamo Academy defender Bradley Bourgeois used his chest to block a shot in six-yard box in the 73rd minute.
