On any other night, a 2-0 win would be just a 2-0 win. But on Saturday night, the Dynamo's 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes gave them not only three well-deserved points, but it etched their name in the MLS record books.
For the 34th consecutive game in Houston - at Robertson Stadium or BBVA Compass Stadium - the Dynamo finished the match with at least one point, tying the all-time all-competitions record set by Real Salt Lake between 2009-2011. Despite the historic result, Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear will not be so quick to trademark commemorative memorabilia.
“You don’t get anything for it,” Kinnear told reporters after the match. “You get a lot of points and get asked a lot of questions and a lot of satisfaction on a week-to-week basis, but in the end it goes down in a statistical record book.
“Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful accomplishment and I’m glad I’m part of the group that’s done it, but there is still a lot of other stuff to be thought about as well.”
Although the Dynamo tied the MLS all-competitions record on Saturday night, the club remains one shy of the MLS regular season record. Saturday’s win was the Dynamo’s 28th consecutive regular season home game unbeaten, one fewer than Real Salt Lake’s record of 29.
Dynamo fans will have to wait a week before the men in orange continue their historic run. Kinnear’s squad will hit the road next Saturday night for a match against the Portland Timbers, before returning home the following Sunday to host the Chicago Fire.
