Mind blown.
That's the reaction right now in the world of American soccer with today's announcement that Manchester City FC and the New York Yankees have joined forces for New York City FC, the 20th team in Major League Soccer, which will begin play in 2015.
A second team in the New York market has long been the goal of MLS commissioner Don Garber and he has not been shy with his intentions. The addition of the New York Yankees, however, is news to everyone. While some might question whether or not a second team in the New York market is good for MLS, Dynamo president Chris Canetti believes this is a positive step for Major League Soccer.
"This is a great announcement for MLS and a big positive step forward," Canetti said. "I know that Commissioner Garber has worked long and hard to make this project a reality and it is good to see his vision come to fruition. It is another symbol of MLS’ growth and development."
Canetti understands what it takes to be successful in New York City. The Connecticut native joined the New York MetroStars in 2000 and worked for the organization until he joined the Houston Dynamo in May 2006.
"I believe that the New York market can support two teams because of the variable dynamics there," he added. "I think New York City will be an incredible success story given its location and the huge soccer market within a short distance of the stadium."
So while the move to put the league's 20th team might be good for New York sports fans, what does this mean for the Dynamo?
In 2011, the Dynamo were moved from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference to make room for the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps. When the Montreal Impact joined MLS in 2012, the Dynamo remained in the Eastern Conference, giving the East 10 teams and the West nine teams. With NYCFC beginning play in 2015, does that spell a potential move back to the Western Conference for the Dynamo?
"I can only guess, but it would seem to make sense that the Dynamo are relocated back to the Western Conference," Canetti said. "It would balance out the conferences with 10 teams per side, and it makes the most geographical sense for us to be realigned."
There are lots of things to consider with a potential move back to the Western Conference for the Dynamo. The move would potentially mean a revival of the Texas Derby with multiple games played each year between the Dynamo and FC Dallas. A switch could also halt the budding rivalry between the Dynamo and Sporting KC. In the grand scheme of things, a move back to the Western Conference for the Dynamo could lead to the return of a balanced schedule that fans have long called for.
