Canetti’s Corner: Big Moves Highlight Busy Offseason

Happy New Year Dynamo Fans!

It’s been 70 hectic days since the final game of the 2014 season.

In that time, a lot of big news has happened, and a lot of change has taken place. As headliners, we have:

It’s been said repeatedly over these 70 days that we are going through an evolution and a transition. We are eager to get back to our winning ways and continue forward in the growth of our club and fan base.

These changes are symbolic of this new era of Dynamo Soccer.

Jordan joined the club on Nov. 10. He has brought a tireless work ethic, along with a great scouting network and strong working knowledge of MLS. He has been on scouting trips to Spain and Argentina and uncovered potential signings in each case. His first Dynamo moves include signing MLS veteran goalkeeper Joe Willis and talented MLS prospect Chandler Hoffman.

Willis, alongside Tyler Deric, gives the Dynamo a strong goalkeeping tandem. Hoffman, who scored 14 goals on loan in USL Pro last year, is a bright young forward that we are eager to see develop.

Coyle was announced on Dec. 9. His passion and energy has had a positive influence on the club. It’s been fun to watch him establish his vision and plan for the team. It is clear that Owen’s experience as a manager in the English Premier League will be a valuable asset to us as we move forward.

Cubo Torres is a monumental signing. Cubo is under contract through 2019 and will join the Dynamo after a short loan back to Chivas Guadalajara. He will join us no later than July 1, but could come earlier. Cubo played the last 18 months at Chivas USA on a loan from Chivas Guadalajara. There, he scored 22 goals in 44 games to become the highest scoring Mexican-born player in MLS history. He is 21 and an up-and-comer with the Mexican National Team. He is an excellent young man with a great personality. In Cubo, we’ve added a player that will strengthen our team, bring excitement to our games, and help us connect with our community.

Our current official roster is as follows:

  1. Corey Ashe
  2. Giles Barnes
  3. Will Bruin
  4. DaMarcus Beasley
  5. Ricardo Clark
  6. AJ Cochran
  7. Brad Davis
  8. Tyler Deric
  9. Boniek Garcia
  10. Luis Garrido
  11. Chandler Hoffman
  12. David Horst
  13. Jason Johnson
  14. Michael Lisch
  15. Alexander López
  16. Jose "Memo" Rodriguez
  17. Kofi Sarkodie
  18. Jermaine Taylor
  19. Erick Torres
  20. Joe Willis

We will continue to build the roster over the next few weeks as Jordan and Coyle have additional moves in the works before training camp opens on Jan. 23.

Change has also occurred on the technical staff. We announced the promotion of Nick Kowba to assistant general manager & director of soccer operations. Nick has been with the Dynamo since 2006 and will now take on a larger role alongside Jordan in overseeing soccer ops. We announced the resignations of assistant coaches Tim Hanley and Steve Ralston, who chose to pursue other opportunities. I would like to personally thank them for their terrific work and commitment to the club over the years. We announced the additions of Sandy Stewart and Paul Caffrey to the coaching staff, joining Wade Barrett. Stewart is a long-time assistant to Coyle and a veteran coach that brings years of valuable experience. Caffrey joins as our first-ever director of sports performance and comes to us with previous MLS experience at Chivas USA and the Colorado Rapids. We are currently searching for a goalkeeping coach to round out the staff.

The technical staff departs for Ft. Lauderdale next week to scout the MLS Combine and then goes to Philadelphia for the MLS Draft on Jan 15.

As we embark on a New Year, we are optimistic about our future. I hope that you share our optimism and are getting excited about the 2015 season (9 weeks away, March 7 vs. CLB). There is a lot of hard work ahead, and we are ready for the challenge. At the end of the day, our goal is to put together a team that you can be proud to support. I am confident that we are going to meet that goal.

I’ll be in touch as more news develops and as we approach opening day.
