Three Houston Dash players called up by U.S. Women’s National Team for Algarve Cup

Houston Dash midfielders Carli Lloyd, Morgan Brian and defender Meghan Klingenberg have been called into the U.S. Women’s National Team for the 2015 Algarve Cup in Portugal, head coach Jill Ellis announced today.

Twenty-five players will make the trip to the Algarve region of Portugal, where Ellis will narrow the roster to 23 players for the competition. The U.S. is in Group B and will face Norway (March 4), Switzerland (March 6) and Iceland (March 9), with placement matches occurring on March 11. Norway and Switzerland will take part in the 2015 Women’s World Cup this summer in Canada along with the United States. Matches against Norway and Switzerland as well as the placement game will be shown live on Fox Sports 1.

Lloyd, 32, has earned 185 caps for the United States, scoring 61 international goals. The attacking midfielder was named MVP of the 2007 Algarve Cup and has scored 10 goals in the competition, good for third among active players.

Brian, 21, has made 21 appearances for the senior national team and scored three goals. The St. Simons Island, Georgia, native was the No. 1 overall pick at the 2015 NWSL College Draft in January from the University of Virginia.

Klingenberg, 26, has 25 caps for the national team and has scored one goal. The Pittsburgh native made seven starts for the Dash in 2014 after joining the team midway through the NWSL season.

All three Dash players started in both of the USWNT’s most recent matches against France and England, a 2-0 loss and 1-0 win, respectively.

The Dash begin preparations for the 2015 season with their annual Dash Day celebration on March 8 and preseason camp kicking off on March 9. The regular season begins on April 10 at BBVA Compass Stadium against the Washington Spirit. Single game and full season tickets are available by calling (713) 276-GOAL or by visiting
