Dynamo Academy Alumni advance in NCAA tournament

Bradley Bourgeois Tulsa Dynamo Academy

Houston Dynamo Academy alumni opened the NCAA tournament Thursday with three wins as Tulsa, Coastal Carolina and Southern Methodist advanced to the second round.

Dynamo Academy product Bradley Bourgeois, the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, made his 20th consecutive start this season as Tulsa outlasted Florida International University, 3-2, in overtime. Miguel Velasquez scored five minutes into the extra session as the Golden Hurricane overcame a late FIU equalizer from Brad Fountain.


Head coach Tom McIntosh and Tulsa will visit No. 7 seed University of Notre Dame for the second round on Sunday in South Bend, Indiana. The match will kick off at 1 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN3.


Former Academy goalkeeper Fernando Pina made five saves and kept a clean sheet as Coastal Carolina University defeated North Florida University, 2-0, at home on Thursday. The junior goalkeeper allowed just 12 goals (0.63 GAA) in 18 starts while recording eight shutouts to earn Big South honorable mention this season.


The Chanticleers have now won at least one NCAA tournament game in five straight seasons. Coastal will visit the University of North Carolina at 5 p.m. CT on Sunday in a match broadcast on ESPN3.  


Elsewhere Thursday, Dynamo Academy alum Garrett Welch, a sophomore defender, did not feature as Southern Methodist University beat Utah Valley, 2-0. SMU hits the road to face University of Denver at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday. 


Academy alum Bryce Marion, a sophomore at No. 8 seed Stanford University, is part of the squad that will host Santa Clara University on Sunday at 7 p.m. CT.
