New Houston Dynamo, Houston Dash, and BBVA Compass Stadium minority partner Ben Guill spoke with HoustonDynamo.com about his decision to acquire the team from AEG and what he sees in store for the organization moving forward.

HoustonDynamo.com: What intrigued you most about becoming part of the new Dynamo ownership group?

Ben Guill: First and foremost, I’m a Houston sports fan. I have always rooted for our hometown teams to do well, including the Dynamo. The success and growth of the franchise in its first 10 years is well-documented, so of course I was intrigued when approached about this opportunity. Soccer is played by more people in our country than any other sport and the growth of MLS is unmatched by any other league. In addition to the Dynamo’s growth, when factoring in a world class stadium, the Dash and Houston Sports Park, it became an easy decision. I’m thrilled to be on board.

HD:As a long-time Houstonian with ownership stake in the Astros as well, what’s your vision for the sports landscape in downtown Houston?

BG: Downtown Houston continues to evolve right before our eyes and our sports teams are at the heart of that growth. When BBVA Compass Stadium opened in 2012, there were few housing and entertainment options surrounding it. Now when you walk around downtown, there is a great energy. Improvements are being made on every block and fans—young professionals that fit the Dynamo’s primary demographic—are taking up residency in the new developments. It’s a new day for downtown Houston.

HD:What are the keys to the Dynamo’s long-term success both on and off the field?

BG: On the field, what I like about the Dynamo is the focus on developing young talent. When talking to GM Matt Jordan and head coach Owen Coyle, it’s clear that they will put a continued focus on bolstering the Academy and developing players through the USL franchise. As I learn more about MLS and teams that are having success, this appears to be a great model for us to ensure sustained success.

Off the field, it’s important for us to remain focused on providing superior customer service. Dynamo fans are some of the most passionate I’ve ever seen. It’s important for us to retain those fans and as new people visit BBVA Compass Stadium for the first game, offer a top-notch soccer experience that can be rivaled anywhere in the world.

HD: You’ve contributed considerable time and resources to various non-profits through the years. Given that the Dynamo has such an active role in the community; will you look to get involved with Dynamo Charities?

BG: Giving back to our community is very important to me. My wife Cynthia and I plan to be very active in the efforts and growth of Dynamo Charities.
