Opening Day is here! The Houston Dynamo host the New England Revolution at 2 p.m. on Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium (TICKETS). We conclude our review of Dynamo jersey history with the final three: Numbers three through one. We started at No. 10 (Giles Barnes, Je-Vaughn Watson, Kei Kamara, etc.) and continue with No. 3, previously held by Calen Carr, Julius James and Kevin Goldthwaite among others, and currently worn by Rob Lovejoy.
Carr was a fan-favorite in his three-year spell in Houston, remembered best for his opening goal in the 2012 MLS Cup Final at LA, his corner flag-jump goal celebrations and a stunning goal against Valencia in the first Charities Cup at BBVA Compass Stadium. Carr suffered the cruelty of tearing his ACL later in the 2012 Final, changing the tide of the game. The University of California alumnus became a part of Dynamo television and radio broadcasts during his rehab in 2013, proving natural in both positions. Carr also was a key figure on the 2011 team, returning after a concussion kept him out of most of the season to start all four playoff games and score the winning goal in the playoff opener at Philadelphia. No. 2
Eddie Robinson wore number 2 for all six seasons in Houston (2006-11) and was another key figure as the Dynamo won both MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007. As noted in our review of No. 5s in Dynamo history, the same back five started both MLS Cup victories for Dominic Kinnear: Goalkeeper Pat Onstad and a back four of Wade Barrett, Craig Waibel and Ryan Cochrane and Robinson.
The North Carolina native was named to the MLS All-Star team in 2006 and the MLS Best XI squad in 2007. In six seasons in Houston, Robinson made 96 regular-season appearances and added nine playoff games. The Tar Heel won four MLS cup championships overall, one of only nine players with four or more MLS Cup titles. Robinson has served as analyst on Dynamo television broadcasts since his retirement following the 2011 season. His fifth season in the booth starts Sunday on ROOT Sports Southwest (1:30 p.m. pregame show).
No. 1
Tally Hall wore the jersey reserved almost exclusively for goalkeepers from 2009-14 and continued a tradition of great goalkeeping started by Pat Onstad. Hall gained the starting job in 2011 and set a franchise record with 12 shutouts in the 2012 regular season. The Washington native also holds a club record with five career postseason shutouts as the Dynamo reached the MLS Cup Final in 2011 and 2012 and the Eastern Conference Championship in 2013.
Hall, a two-time MLS All-Star and 2013 Dynamo MVP, appeared in 164 games and recorded 46 shutouts across all competitions in six seasons with the Dynamo.
