The eyes of the nation were on the U.S. men's national team last night as they looked to rebound from a 2-0 loss in Guatemala, needing a win against the Central Americans to keep control of their destinies in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying. They did so in convincing fashion with a 4-0 victory in Columbus, including a goal from former Houston Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron and one from April 10 opponent Clint Dempsey (TICKETS). Outside the U.S., there were still a couple of current Dynamo players involved in international duty around the world.
Boniek García, Honduras
García entered as a substitute in the 64th minute for Honduras on Friday night as Honduras continued World Cup qualifying against El Salvador. Los Catrachos took a 2-1 lead in the second half, but surrendered an 89th minute goal to leave San Salvador with a point apiece. García earned a start for the return match in Honduras on Tuesday night, and delivered the opening goal in style in the 54th minute.
García's blast held up for Honduras, and they added a second goal to take three points from the match. Honduras now sits in second place in Group A for qualifying, behind Mexico and tied on points (4) with Canada, who lost to Mexico on Friday and Tuesday. Two matches remain in this round of qualifying, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the hexagonal stage.
Erick Torres, Mexico U-23
While the United States U-23's chances at playing in this summer's Olympic Games went out the window with a 3-2 aggregate loss to Colombia in a playoff last night, Erick Torres and the Mexico U-23's spent the international break in Portugal playing a pair of friendlies, having already qualified for Rio back in October with a Olympic Qualifying Championship win.
Torres started and played the first half of a 2-1 loss to Japan last Friday, then didn't appear in Mexico's 4-0 loss to Portugal on Monday.
Both Torres and García will now return to Houston as the Dynamo have a bye week this weekend, then have back-to-back home matches against Seattle Sounders (April 10) and LA Galaxy (April 15). Tickets for both matches are available here.
