The Houston Dynamo have acquired defender Keyner Brown on loan from Herediano of Costa Rica, the club announced today. The agreement include a loan through the end of 2016 with an option for a permanent transfer. Brown will be added to Dynamo roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.
Brown, 24, has made 168 appearances in the Costa Rican first division, including 44 during the 2015-16 season with Herediano, one of Costa Rica’s largest clubs. The central defender helped Herediano win two league titles, the 2015 and 2016 Verano (summer season) tournaments. He scored the tying goal in extra time of the second leg of the 2015 Final, a penalty shootout victory over Alajuelense. Brown started both legs of the 2016 Final in May as Herediano defeated Alajuelense once again.
“Keyner is a young, athletic defender whose physical presence will be a welcomed addition to our backline.” Dynamo VP/general manager Matt Jordan said. “We look forward to him integrating into our group as we push into the second half of the season.”
He was a regular starter as Herediano made consecutive appearances in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, including starts in both legs of the 2014-15 semifinals, a 6-3 aggregate series defeat to Mexican power Club América. The Puerto Limón, Costa Rica native debuted in the Costa Rican top flight in 2010 with Brujas FC.
Brown has two caps for the Costa Rica national team and made one appearance at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2011.
Brown is the fourth player added by the Dynamo during the summer transfer window. The club acquired midfielder José Escalante on loan from CD Olimpia of Honduras earlier today, added midfielder Yair Arboleda on loan from Independiente Santa Fe last Friday and midfielder Eric Alexander via trade from the Montreal Impact on July 22. Brown will occupy an international roster spot on the Dynamo roster, along with Agus García, Cristian Maidana, Erick Torres, Mauro Manotas, Escalante and Arboleda.
