RECAP: Generation Adidas Cup day two results

Day two of the second round of Generation Adidas Cup Central Region qualifying took place on a beautiful afternoon and evening at Houston Sports Park. Saturday's matches featured the two top teams in the group and set up some interesting matches for the final games on Monday.

FC Dallas 1, Toronto FC 0

The top of the table battle between FC Dallas and Toronto FC lived up to its billing, but only Dallas came out of it unscathed and unbeaten in the group. FCD forward Jesus Ferreira was lively to start, hitting the post and forcing a good save from the Toronto keeper in the first five minutes. But 18 minutes in, TFC got the best chance of the afternoon. Kunle Dada-Luke took on two defenders and drew a penalty for the Reds, but he blazed his spot kick over the bar. A minute later he had an opportunity to atone from a tight angle, but his low shot flashed inches past the far post.

FC Dallas got their chances in the second half, with Alex Bautista getting forward from his left back spot to get free in the box but unable to put his shot on target. Ferreira later worked his way to the touchline from the right side and layed a ball off for fellow first team signing Bryan Reynolds, but his shot from eight yards was deflected past the goal. Dallas got their goal just two minutes from time. After a recycled ball was put into the box from the right side, substitute Alex Fuentes got his foot on the ball and poked it in from six yards. Toronto pushed for an equalizer in the final minutes, but a brave goal line block from Bautista at the post prevented the match from going to a penalty shootout.

Chicago Fire 1, Columbus Crew SC 0

The second match of the afternoon was another tightly-contested affair, with the Chicago Fire doing enough to get the edge on Columbus Crew SC. Crew SC got the best chances of the first period, but were unable to capitalize. Columbus hit the post 27 minutes in, as defender Griffin DeBolt’s long-range free kick nearly found the bottom corner. A minute later, forward Derick Broche tried to find Colin Biros at the back post, but Biros was whistled offside. Broche had another attempt just after the half-hour mark, charging down the right side, but he could only manage a toe-poke right at at the Chicago goalkeeper.

The Fire took the lead just minutes out of the break. After being fouled on the left sideline, Gilberto Angeles sent a long free kick into the box. Victor Bazerra rose to meet the cross and head it in the back of the net. Later, Roberto Alonzo drew a penalty for the Fire with his run down the left side, but Nick Fernandez slipped as he attempted the penalty kick and sent the shot sailing.

Sporting Kansas City 4, Houston Dynamo 0

Sporting Kansas City grabbed an early lead and piled on late as they took down the Houston Dynamo in Saturday’s final match. Munoz connected on a cross from Sean Karani just three minutes in to make it 1-0.

The Dynamo pushed forward with chances at the equalizer, but SKC doubled their lead in the 56th minute as Mason Visconti scored directly from a corner kick. Visconti then played provider in the 72nd minute, laying the ball off to Grayson Barber to get around the keeper for an empty net finish. Visconti was there again for his second goal in the 80th minute, tapping in a cross from Max Rugova to finish the match.
