The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros scored their first goal of the season and obtained their first points in a 1-0 win on the road against OKC Energy FC. RGV’s Ruben Luna scored from the penalty spot.

The RGV FC Toros were welcomed with windy conditions in Oklahoma City. The first clear chance at goal happened on an Energy FC mishap. Richard Dixon headed the ball to his own goalkeeper, Cody Laurendi. Laurendi was forced to make a diving effort so the ball would not end in the back of the net.

Eric Bird almost got on the score sheet in the 27th minute. Bird was left wide open inside the box and shot a volley that went wide to the left of the goal. Emilio Garcia took his chances from a free kick in the 33rd minute. Garcia’s shot went over the crossbar.

The Toros kept applying pressure in the second half. Jose Escalante blasted a shot to the left post of the goal. Garcia was able to get the rebound but his shot hit an OKC defender. Calle Brown, RGV FC Toros goalkeeper, left his mark on the game in the 55th minute. Brown stopped Jose Barril’s penalty kick to keep his clean sheet.

In the 67th minute Ruben Luna scored the first Toros goal of the season from the penalty spot. Camilo Monroy was pulled inside the penalty box which lead to the Toros being awarded a penalty. In the 74th minute OKC’s Dixon was shown a red card after getting two yellow cards. RGV’s Victor Garza was also shown a red card in the 83rd minute. In the dying minutes of the game, OKC were left with nine men after Jose Barril committed a dangerous foul on Jorginho James.

The Toros return to H-E-B Park on Wednesday, April 12. RGV FC will host Colorado Springs Switchbacks on the weekday game. The Toros will seek to score their first goal at home and the obtain a back-to-back win.
