Joe Willis | Postgame at Portland Timbers

On making a big save early in the first half…
“It was a corner kick and I saw that I wasn’t going to be able to get to it, so I tried to get my feet set and try to react to it and fortunately I was able to keep it out.”

On the team’s mentality during halftime…
“It was happy but we knew there was a lot of game to be played. We were in a good spot and a good position, but the job wasn’t done yet and we needed to keep pretty much doing what we were doing in the first half.”

On if he felt pressure coming into this match…
“No, not really. I think coming into this game all the pressure was on Portland. I said it before the game, they needed to win tonight. We didn’t need to win. We just needed to score a goal and we needed to tie. They were the number one seed. Coming into this, we had everything to gain and they had everything to lose. I think the team has played so well lately, I had a lot of confidence in the guys and it worked out pretty well for us.”

On taking over the starting goalkeeper spot…
“I was excited. Ask any professional athlete who is sitting on the bench: they want to play. That’s why they do it. So when I was told that I would be starting, I was excited. I was ready. That’s what you train all year for.”

On if the players feel they have more to play for…
“Absolutely. It’s nice to win. It’s always fun to win and you’re happy and you want to celebrate, but the job’s not done yet. Still a lot of work to do. Still some good teams we have to play. We can enjoy tonight and tomorrow it’s back to work.”

On if the team feels like they have a chip on their shoulder…
“Absolutely. I think Wilmer [Cabrera] is right. This team has worked extremely hard all year. Some things haven’t gone our way and some things have. He hit the nail on the head. Everything we’ve gotten this year, we’ve earned. We’re happy to do it and that’s our plan moving forward.”
