RGV FC stays unbeaten at home with 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy II

The RGVFC Toros ended the scoring drought at HEB Park as Forward Aldo Quintanilla found the back of the net. But the goal wasn't enough as the Toros played to a 1-1 draw against Los Angeles Galaxy II.

Three Houston Dynamo players joined the Toros for the match, Jared Watts, Mac Steeves, and Adam Lundkvist. Watts and Steeves started for Rio Grande Valley, while Lundkvist entered at halftime for Watts. It was the first competitive minutes for both Watts and Lundkvist since being acquired by the Dynamo. Robert Castellanos made his home debut in the match against his former team.

The first dangerous play of the match came in the 13th minute. Los Dos’ Efrain Alvarez sent in a dangerous low cross. Hugo Arellano failed to connect with the cross, and a minute later, Rio Grande Valley scored. Aldo Quintanilla shot from distance, and the ball skipped through Wade Hamilton’s gloves and found the back of the net.

Rio Grande Valley tried to double their lead shortly after. Kai Greene shot in the 19th minute but the ball sailed over the crossbar. Jesus Enriquez cut his way from the left side of the penalty box in the 25th minute. Unfortunately for Enriquez, he could not place his shot on target.

Los Angeles Galaxy II pushed lines forward in the second half. Los Angeles’ Ethan Zubak headed a Jonathan Hernandez cross but could not get the equalizer. Three minutes later, Zubak juked out Nico Corti, goalkeeper for the RGV FC Toros, but took too long and the RGV defense cleared the danger.

In the 78th minute, Zubac headed in a dangerous cross once again. His shot barely went wide to left of the goal. Mac Steeves had an opportunity to extend the Toros’ lead in the 82nd minute. Wade Hamilton sliding save denied Steeves’s one-touch shot. In the 87th minute, Los Dos found the equalizer. Jean Engola sent a through ball from LA’s own half.Frank Lopez dribbled past Corti and managed to capitalize on the play.

The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros will face Real Monarchs SLC on the road. That match will take place on Monday, June 4 in Salt Lake City.
