The Houston Dash Australians Kyah Simon and Clare Polkinghorne both represented their country in Australia’s big match against the USA. They earned a 1-1 draw to keep themselves tied for first place with the reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champions. Polkinghorne put in another 90-minute shift while Simon came off the bench in the 58th minute, playing a solid 32 minutes.
In last year’s Tournament of Nations, Australia earned their first-ever win over the USA in the opening match which would eventually lead to them being named tournament champions. The Matildas looked to do the same again with a very lively and threatening attack to begin the match.
With both sides exchanging chances, Australia was able to put one away in the 22nd minute. After clearing a US corner, the Matildas were quick on the counter to find themselves in a three-vs-two scenario. Midfielder Chloe Logarzo was able to find the near corner of the net to put Australia up early in the match.
Despite entering the locker room with a 1-0 lead, the game was far from over. The USA came out in the second half pushing forward and trying to find an equalizer. Australia dropped off throughout the second half, trying to maintain their lead to claim the title only two games in.
The USA answered back in the 90th minute, when they received a corner kick that the Australians clearly thought was a goal kick. With this lapse in concentration, forward Lindsey Horan was able to force her way into the six-yard box to head the ball into the goal for the equalizer.
Australia and the United States are still tied for first place with one win and one draw. With one game left for both teams, winning is a must if they want to be crowned champions of the tournament.
Simon and Polkinghorne wrap up the 2018 Tournament of Nations on Thursday, August 2 when they face off against reigning Asian Cup champions Japan. Kickoff is schedule for 4:45 PM CT and is expected to stream on US Soccer’s website.
