Houston Dash DF Taylor Comeau, MF Sofia Huerta named to NWSL Team of the Month

Taylor Comeau and Sofia Huerta were named to the NWSL Team of the Month for August by the NWSL Media Association, the league announced earlier today. 

Comeau and Huerta earned Team of the Month honors for leading Houston to three victories in August.  With an emphasis on spreading the ball around, the duo combined to assist on three goals. Huerta set a new career-high for goals scored in a single season after scoring three times this month to bring her total in 2018 to eight.  

In the Dash’s home finale against Sky Blue FC, Huerta played a pivotal role in the 6-1 victory. Her cross in the 48th minute led to a header by FW Veronica Latsko for the game-winning goal. In the 65th minute, Huerta scored her eighth goal of the season off a cross from forward Kealia Ohai. Two minutes later, she won a penalty kick that was later converted by forward Rachel Daly. 

Comeau started all five of Houston’s matches in August and and played 448 of a possible 450 minutes. In Houston’s regular-season series finale against the Washington Spirit on Aug. 17, Comeau contributed to the Dash’s only clean sheet for the month and registered an assist, her first of the season. Since joining the Dash in June, Comeau has established herself as one of the most efficient defenders on the back line with a tackle success rate of 85 percent. 

This is the first Team of the Month selection for both Comeau and Huerta since joining the Houston Dash. They join Dash teammates GK Jane Campbell (March), FW Rachel Daly (March, May, and July), and MF Kristie Mewis (May) as Dash players named to Team of the Month. Huerta was named to the Team of the Month in April while playing for the Chicago Red Stars.  

The Dash duo will depart with the team as they travel to North Carolina for the final game of the season on Sept. 8th. They will take on the North Carolina Courage with the chance to give the Dash their first winning record in franchise history.
