Joe Willis nominated for MLS Save of the Year

Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis has been nominated for MLS Save of the Year. You can submit your vote here until Sunday, November 11 at midnight PDT.

Willis' one-handed save against Portland Timbers forward Dairon Asprilla on Saturday, July 29 at Providence Park was the nominated save. The big save came in the 20th minute when Asprilla received a pass from midfielder Sebastián Blanco and fired a right-footed shot that was blocked by Willis’ right hand.

The 2018 season was a record-breaking one for Willis as he set a single-season career high for minutes played and games started, with 2,340 minutes in 26 games on the year. The 30-year old goalkeeper also set a single-season career high for games won with nine, surpassing his previous record of five.

The St. Louis, Missouri native was a key member for the Dynamo in their 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Championship run with outstanding performances in the semifinals and the final. Willis saved two penalties in the penalty shutout against Los Angeles FC in the semifinals and kept a clean sheet against the Philadelphia Union in final.
