The Houston Dynamo have signed Honduran defender Maynor Figueroa, the club announced today.

Figueroa played in 87 games across all competitions for FC Dallas from 2016-2018 and helped lead the team to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship and MLS Supporters Shield in his first season. The defender saw action in three playoff games for FC Dallas, including the 2016 Western Conference Semifinals. Figueroa also appeared in eight Concacaf Champions League matches for Dallas and scored the game-winning goal in his tournament debut, a 2-1 victory over Nicaraguan side Real Estelí FC in 2016.

“Maynor is a consummate professional who will bring invaluable experience, quality and leadership to our team both on the field and in our locker room,” said Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan. “We welcome him to the Houston Dynamo as we prepare for the 2019 season.”

Internationally, the defender has represented Honduras at two FIFA World Cups, three Concacaf Gold Cup tournaments and the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Figueroa has earned 148 caps with Honduras and captained the team at the 2015 and 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup.

“We are really excited about bringing Maynor to our club. He is an icon, a well-known leader with the Honduran National Team. He is the captain. Adding his experience, as a center back and a left back in this league, is invaluable” head coach Wilmer Cabrera said. “We believe he is going to bring good experience and give us depth and help solidify our backline. He was excited to be part of our project and having him in our team will be a big help to us.”

Figueroa spent eight seasons in the English Premier League before moving to Major League Soccer with the Colorado Rapids at the end of 2015. He played in 45 games for Hull City during a two-year stint from 2013-2015. The defender won the 2013 English FA Cup with Wigan Athletic and appeared in 200 games for the Latics over six seasons.

Figueroa joined Wigan after five seasons with CD Olimpia and one season with CD Victoria in his native Honduras. The defender scored six goals in 100 appearances for Olimpia and won four domestic league titles during his tenure with the team.

With the addition of Figueroa, the Dynamo now have 26 players under contract for the 2019 season. Figueroa will occupy an international roster spot, giving the Dynamo seven internationals currently on the squad.
