The Houston Dash acquired midfielder Sophie Schmidt through the NWSL Discovery Process, the club announced today.

Schmidt joins the Dash after three seasons with FFC Frankfurt in Germany’s Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga. The midfielder scored six goals in 52 matches for Frankfurt and reached the semifinals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League during the 2015-2016 edition of the tournament.

“Sophie is another player with extensive international experience in Europe and with the Canadian Women’s National Team,” said head coach James Clarkson. “Her experience and ability with the ball will have a major impact on the team.”

Prior to playing in Germany’s top division, the midfielder spent two seasons with Sky Blue FC in the NWSL. Schmidt scored eight goals in 41 appearances for the New Jersey club. The University of Portland product brings more than 13 years of experience as a professional athlete after beginning her career with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2005. She spent five seasons in Vancouver before playing for the MagicJack in 2011 and Kristianstads DDF in 2012.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has scored 18 goals and tallied 20 assists in 180 caps for the Canadian Women’s National Team since making her debut as a 16-year-old on April 19, 2005. Schmidt has represented Canada at three FIFA Women’s World Cups (2007, 2011 and 2015) and won back-to-back bronze medals with Canada at the Summer Olympic Games in the 2012 and 2016 edition of the tournament.
