A.J. DeLaGarza named to Guam National Team for World Cup qualifiers

Houston Dynamo defender A.J. DeLaGarza was named to Guam’s National Team for two 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the Guam Football Association announced early this morning.


Guam will begin its qualification efforts for the 2022 FIFA World Cup when it takes on Bhutan in a two-leg matchup. Guam will first travel to Bhutan on Thursday, June 6 at 7 a.m. CDT at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan. The second leg of the matchup will be played on Tuesday, June 11 at 12:15 a.m. CT at the Guam National Football Stadium in Hagåtña, Guam.


DeLaGarza has earned 12 caps for the Guam national team, including six starts for his country during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign. He first represented the country of his father’s birth on November 16, 2013 against Laos. His most recent appearance at the international level came on November 12, 2016 in a 2017 EAFF Championship qualifying match against Chinese Taipai where he started and played all 90 minutes in a 2-0 loss.


DeLaGarza has made 16 appearances this season for the Dynamo, and has started at right back in 12 of Houston’s 13 matches in regular-season play. Since joining the Dynamo before the 2017 season, DeLaGarza has appeared in 46 regular-season matches.
